Marine Diesel Engine Maintenance Class

This one day course is divided into classroom theory and hands on practicum on a boat.  Students receive classroom theory on diesel engines including their fuel, lubrication, cooling, exhaust and electrical systems along with other topics. Time is spent on a boat identifying parts.  Hands on maintenance is performed by students and may include changing oil & filter as well as primary and secondary fuel filters. The course concludes with a classroom round up.  This course is for anyone who wants a better understanding of basic marine diesel engine maintenance.

Course Syllabus

9:00 am-12:00 pm - Classroom Instruction
     Introduction
     Principles of diesel engines
     Fuel systems
     Lubrication system
     Cooling system 
          Sea water
          Fresh water
     Exhaust system
     Electrical system
     Transmission
     Diagnosis & Repair chart
     Spare parts

12:00 pm-1:00 pm: Lunch

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm (approx.): Practical on boat*
     Identify parts
     Change oil and oil filter
     Change primary fuel filter
     Change secondary fuel filter
     Bleed fuel system
     Change raw water pump impeller (optional)
     Inspect alternator belt. Tension/replace as needed.
 
*Note: All activities depend on replacement parts availability.
